Dear Flat Rock Elementary
The beginning of a new school year, like the dawning of a new day, reminds us that the future holds infinite possibilities. I hope that your summer was relaxing, filled with adventures and good health because you deserve it. The opportunity to refuel over the summer is a necessary component of the important work that we all do. I know that we are about to begin a great school year filled with hope, vision, and excitement. As we begin this new year, I wish everyone the greatest success as we welcome over 1,000 students to their educational journey of 2018-2019.
As we start this year, let’s continue our work on creating a positive and professional learning community that is supportive, caring, and committed to building a school where everyone feels valued and connected. This year will continue to be shaped by our reform efforts as outlined in our Continuous School Improvement Plan (CSIP). Henry Ford once said, “If you think you can do a thing or you think you can’t, you’re right.” I know that we can meet all of our initiatives because we have a staff and community that believes in the promise of educational excellence. We know that we have work to do, work that requires commitment, focus and collaboration, and we know that we will succeed. The theme for the 2018-2019 school year is “We are better together, through unity, strength and academic excellence. To make this happen, we will place greater emphasis in the following areas:
- Continuing to foster a collaborative and positive school culture and climate with all students, parents, staff and community stakeholders
- Creating a rigorous and relevant framework around instruction in the areas of language arts, reading and math
global citizenship and improving the well-being of the whole student
As parents, staff members and community stakeholder to our children at Flat Rock we need to ensure that we are all in to provide wisdom and care to produce the best students and global citizen. My hope is that through our reinvigorated Learning Community, both you and our students will think of our school as places where community of learners come together to do interesting consequential work. We will attempt new things this year and that will challenge our students to work harder and become critical thinkers and learners. We as the administrative team, in turn, will continue to provide the infrastructure and human capacity to support our ability to make great things happen.
I know each of us wants to make a difference in the lives of our students. As we move forward with our reform efforts, I invite you to think about something written so long ago but still resonates today. Emerson said, “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” I am confident that we will blaze a trail filled with success and accomplishment as, together, we launch the best year yet for Flat Rock Elementary.
I hope that each of you enjoys the remaining days of summer. I look forward to a year filled with stories of great success and great learning.
Malik Douglas, Ed.D.
